Recent studies, including one by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), have found a potential link between the use of chemical hair straighteners and relaxers and an increased risk of several types of cancer, including uterine, breast, and ovarian cancers. Data from more than 33,000 women in the Sister Study revealed that those who reported using hair straightening products were almost twice as likely to develop uterine cancer than those who did not. Frequent users, defined as those who used the products more than four times in the previous year, were about 2.5 times more likely to develop uterine cancer.

These findings, published on October 17, 2022, in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, build upon past research that has established a connection between hair straightening chemicals and an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancers. The NIH study published in 2020 indicated that regular use of chemical hair dyes and straighteners could lead to a greater risk of breast cancer. Black women, who tend to use these hair products more frequently, were found to have a 45% higher rate of certain cancers.

It is crucial to note that while the NIH study has identified a correlation, it has not established a direct cause-and-effect relationship between hair straightening products and cancer. However, these findings have led to calls for safer personal care products, as hair straighteners, like all personal care products, can be brought to market without approval for safety by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Find Out If You May Be Eligible For Compensation

If you believe that you or someone you know has been affected by the use of these products and may be eligible for compensation, it would be advisable to consult with legal experts who specialize in such cases. They can offer a free, no-obligation case evaluation to help determine if you have a valid claim for compensation.
